Twydall Youth Project

(Managed by Twydall Youth Project)

Every Child Matters outcomes met:

  • staying safe

  • enjoying and achieving

Following the unfortunate closure of the Twydall Junior Youth Club in 2005, Gillingham Youth for Christ supported the community of Twydall to consult and work with young people to develop plans for youth provision in the area and to secure funding to deliver those services.

The project is managed and run by the local community, working with local partners, and provides activities in Twydall, including a monthly Pub Club, twice weekly Drama Club, regular family club and holiday activities for the children and young people of Twydall. Support includes one to one work with children and young people, dealing with their educational challenges and helping them plan for their future, plus making links with other community services. Young people are involved in consultation and development of the project at every stage. Twydall’s neighbourhood police officer highlighted the need for youth provision in the area as a number of young people hang about in groups and sometimes cause trouble. This is largely born out of boredom due to the lack of positive activities for young people in the area. Consultation in 2007 highlighted a number of areas where young people wished to see some form of provision: a place to go; sporting activities; football cage; performing arts; youth shelter; improvement to existing facilities (skate park and pavilion). An application for funding has been made to Children in Need and the project will also fundraise in the community to sustain activities. Other potential sources are being explored and it is hoped that the high level of local media coverage will ensure the clubs grow and flourish.
