Sherwin Knight Breakfast Club (Managed by Sherwin Knight Junior School)
Every Child Matters outcomes met:
A breakfast club providing breakfast every day FOR 70 pupils of Sherwin Knight Junior School (aged 8 - 11) and the adjoining infant school (aged 4-7) - probably the largest membership of a Breakfast Club in a Medway primary school. The school is situated within one of the most deprived areas of Medway.
Children have a healthy choice of cereals, toast, beans or spaghetti and juice and are encouraged to serve themselves and support others. The project aims to build social skills and provides a nutritional start, thereby aiding learning and improving behaviour in school. It also encourages attendance and punctuality. Activities have recently expanded to include ICT and arts tuition. Local volunteers are encouraged to take part.
School attendance has improved from 93.8% to 95% since 2001/2). 90.2% of junior school children attending are making positive educational attainment progress with enhanced SATs results.
Parents value the service and their contributions will be increased. A bid has been made to the Extended Schools' budget to cover the cost of Breakfast Club staff for the next financial year. A further bid is being made to the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities programme.
