  • making a positive contribution

Arethusa and Medway LA are now working in partnership to use outdoor education to improve attainment in English and Maths at key stage 2. Aims are to enhance pupils' self esteem, confidence, concentration and persistence in given tasks in order for them to reach National Curriculum Level 4 attainment in English and Mathematics. Pupils experienced a 4-day residential visit to the Arethusa Venture Centre during the 2006 summer holidays. They took part in a series of adventurous activities, all of which gave them the opportunity to set a demanding personal target and strive to achieve it with the help and support of the staff and fellow pupils. The work focused on the feelings that people experience when overcoming a fear or a specific challenge. Everyone succeeded in many of the activities and this feeling will be transferred to the classroom environment at the start of Year 6. 52 pupils from 4 Medway schools enjoyed this exciting opportunity - St Mary's Primary Strood, Saxon Way Primary, St James CE Primary, Byron Primary.
