Case Study 1 Background Young person was regularly taking time off school to hang around with friends. Approach Young person was caught on a truancy sweep with 2 other young people and returned to school where he was spoken to by the police officer, the attendance officer from the school and the Truancy Watch Co-ordinator.Outcome We monitor young peoples attendance 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after the truancy sweeps. This young persons attendance rose from 31% to 98%. This young person is in year 10 of school so if he continues to go to school then he has a much better chance of succeeding in his GCSE's next year.
Estimated savings to statutory services as a result of interventionIt costs around £20/day to educate a child which is obviously wasted if the young person is not in school. Compared to the 4 weeks before the intervention this young person attended around 12 more days, meaning we made use of £240 that would probably have been wasted. This is one of quite a few similar cases. |
