Children's Fund Medway (CFM) was part of a national Government programme piloting new preventative services to improve the lives of 5-13 year old children, young people and their families.

CFM received £4.2m from the DfES (now the DCSF) to fund our work from April 2002 to March 2008.  All Children's Fund programmes came to an end on 31 March 2008 but the Government has announced that it will provide the 2007/8 level of CF funding to Local Authorities for the next three years to fund preventative services. In Medway this will be £632k p.a.

A Review of Children's Fund Medway's work from 2002-5 (1.7MB) gives brief details of the innovative preventative services which have been made possible in Medway by CFM funding and support. Case studies add a personal note to the statistical evidence provided and quotes from directors of Medway Council and Medway Primary Care Trust show how much CFM’s work is valued by the statutory agencies. This is supplemented and updated by our newsletters and this website.

Every Child Matters: Outcomes

What have we done?

We have:

  • changed children's lives

  • gained a broader insight into what is needed

  • facilitated innovation

  • gathered knowledge, experience, trust and faith to make it work

  • given children and parents a voice and an opportunity to contribute

  • developed a well-balanced mix of over 30 projects covering a whole range of issues

  • established new services

  • enabled parents to recognise the need for and to seek help

  • given children the opportunity to 'self-refer' and seek help

  • demonstrated effective partnership working across agencies, especially between voluntary and statutory sectors

  • encouraged joint and new ways of working between agencies

  • broken down barriers - established support networks to help everyone come together

  • developed new ways of doing things e.g. video evaluation

  • enabled opportunities and choice for everyone including families and siblings through the projects

  • acquired knowledge and already put a legacy in place for the future

  • established a diverse partnership board

  • created a quarterly newsletter to disseminate good practice.

  • set up this website

  • We constantly evaluated all our work to see what worked and why it worked and shared the good practice.

Targeted areas

Following an in-depth needs analysis and mapping exercise in Autumn 2001, CFM focused its delivery on the then top ten wards identified as being those with multiple needs.

Earl, Frindsbury Extra, Gillingham North, Holcombe, Luton, Medway,  Town, Troy Town, Twydall, Wayfield

Additionally we target some neighbourhoods in less needy wards.
